Missing The Point

should muslim women wear veils in their photo IDs? should muslim cab drivers be able to refuse to drive people who have closed bottles of alcohol? should the koran be given special protected status under the law?

these and many other intriguing debate topics make nothing more clear than this one simple fact: the majority of people having these discussions are just plain missing the point.

the point is that in your home you are the king of your castle. if you want to wear a veil or a monkey suit, more power to you. if you abstain from alcohol or drink rat poison, bottoms up. if you have a special safe for your koran so no infidelous breath will ever degrade its cover, knock yourself out.

but don't go to mcdonald's for a veggie burger on sprouted bread.

huh?

here's the point: IF YOU WANT TO LIVE UNDER ISLAMIC CONDITIONS, LIVE IN AN ISLAMIC COUNTRY.

why is nobody saying that? it seems so obvious to me- if you want to wear a hijab or a chador or a burka go to iran or syria or saudi arabia and earn praise as a modest woman. but don't come to america- of your own free will- to take advantage of our freedoms and then demand we change our standards (however flawed) to meet yours. i hear they have no vices (in public, at least) in many muslim countries- so go live there.

lest you jump into defensive posture, rest assured that this is not a case of 'if you don't like it, leave.' rather, it's a case of, 'if you don't want it, don't come here in the first place.'

seems pretty simple to me. if you're a devout muslim and that is your main agenda, why would you leave a muslim country to come to a place of sin and depravity? nobody brought you here. nobody even wants you here, except maybe your cousin who needs more help at the gas station.

so just go away. i think it's win-win. you keep your shariah in your neck of the woods, and i'll keep the constitution.

what's so hard to understand?

The Dutch government said Friday it plans to draw up legislation "as soon as possible" banning full-length veils known as burkas and other clothing that covers a person's entire face, in public places.

"The Cabinet finds it undesirable that face-covering clothing — including the burka — is worn in public places, for reasons of public order, security and protection of citizens," Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk said in a statement.

Basing the order on security concerns apparently was intended to respond to warnings that outlawing clothing like the burka, worn by some Muslim women, could violate the constitutional guarantee against religious discrimination.

In the past, a majority of the Dutch parliament has said it would approve a ban on burkas, but opinion polls in advance of national elections on Nov. 22 suggest a shift to the left, and it is unclear if a majority in the new parliament would still back the ban.

Once the Cabinet drafts the bill, it is sent to the 150-member legislature for enactment.
